Beacon Hill North/Rothwell Heights is originally named for a lighthouse in the Ottawa River that was visible from the area. The highly-acclaimed Colonel By Secondary School is located in Beacon Hill North/Rothwell Heights and is the only public school in Eastern Ontario to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. The school also has an innovative technological program with courses in robotics and computer animation. Other noted schools in the area include Ecole Elementaire Catholique La Verendrye, La Phare Elementary School, Henry Munro Middle School, and Robert Hopkins Public School. Annunciation of the Lord and Greenbelt Baptist Church are local churches in the community.
