Established around 1960, Barrhaven is a newer family-centric suburb in Ottawa with neighbourhoods spread throughout the Greenbelt. Named for the owner of the land, Mel Barr, this area is located in the southern part of the city and is nicknamed “The Haven” or “Far Haven.” Barrhaven’s individual communities include Pheasant Run, Davidson Heights, Heritage Park, Stonebridge, Half Moon Bay, Cedargrove, Crestway, Longfields, Heart’s Desire, Barrhaven on the Green, and Knollsbrook. Development of Barrhaven real estate started 1960 and the area continues expanding with detached houses, townhomes, condominiums, and terrace homes added every day. Longfields and Knollsbrook homes in Central Barrhaven were built between 1977 and 2004 range in price from $300K-$615K for detached and $250K-$425K for attached. In Old Barrhaven (Pheasant Run, Cedargrove, Heritage Park, Barrhaven on the Green) homes were built in between 1967 to 1992 and 2007 to 2011. Detached houses range in price from $275K-$740K and attached homes from $250K-$385K. Barrhaven South (Stonebridge, Half Moon Bay, Heart’s Desire, Strandherd) homes were built in between 1967 to 1992 and 2007 to 2011 and range in price from $350K-$820K for detached and $250K-$470K for attached. Homes in Barrhaven East (Davidson Heights, Crestway) were completed between 1993 and 2005 and sell for $330K-$685K for detached and $250K-$375K for attached houses.

Recreation

Barrhaven is home to many recreational and social activities for the entire family. The Walter Baker Sports Centre and Minto Recreational Complex offer a wide range of courses, programs, and activities for all ages including camps, arts and crafts, dance, athletics, and others. They also contain ice skating rinks, swimming pools, fitness centres, and indoor walking tracks. The Ruth Dickinson Library is also attached to the Walter Baker Centre and offers programs for children and adults.

Barrhaven is home to numerous parks and playgrounds, splash pads, sports fields, tennis and basketballs courts, a skating park, and there are scenic trails along the river for walking, hiking and cycling.

The area also has a seven-theatre Cineplex for moviegoers and during the summer, many community associations offer movies in the parks. Golf courses, martial arts studios, private sports clubs, yoga centres, private gyms, etc. keep the residents of Barrhaven happy, healthy, and busy.

Shopping and Dining

Residents of Barrhaven meet all their shopping and dining needs easily in the neighbourhood. Larger retailers such as Walmart, Canadian Tire, Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot and others are located within a short distance from each other as well as many smaller shops and strip malls sprinkled throughout the area.

From health and dental clinics, beauty salons, pet shops, and vet clinics, to a multitude of banks, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. you will find everything you need within a short drive. Restaurants range from fast food to family-friendly and fine dining, and the area also has a selection of coffee shops, pubs, and bars.
