Vanier was named for the former francophone Governor General George Etienne Vanier and was once known as a predominantly French community. However, the population has diversified in recent years. This community offers very affordable housing and active community associations are increasing the reputation and beautification of the area. Homes were mostly built between 1940-1960 and prices for detached homes range from $215K-$975K and attached homes between $250K-$600K.

Recreation

With three larger parks and many smaller ones, Vanier offers plenty of opportunities for recreation, from basketball and volleyball courts to skating rinks, bowling lawn, three wading pools, three splash pads, and play structures for children. There are also several yearly festivals including the Vanier Winter Carnival in February, the Maple Sugar Festival in March, Vanier Velofest, the Fete de la St-Jean in June, as well as others.

Shopping and Dining

Vanier offers a variety of diverse ethnic and Canadian menu-based restaurants, giving residents many choices for their dining pleasures. There are also several strip malls with retail shops, bars, pubs, and a Farmer’s Market from July to October. Residents are also a short distance to downtown Ottawa, where they can take advantage of all the amenities the city centre has to offer.

Schools and Churches

There are many schooling options available in Vanier, including the Ahlul-Bayt Islamic School, Assumption Elementary School, Ecole Elementaire Catholique Le Petit Prince, Ecole Elementaire Publique Le Trillium, QC Event School, Rockcliffe Montessori Pre-School, Robert E Wilson Public School, Sphere College, and The Ottawa Inuit Children's Centre. Churches in Vanier include the Communaute Chretienne Saint-Frere-Andre, Eastview Baptist Church, and St. Charbel Maronite.
